documentary style photography session

Becca and Sean are getting married on October 12, 2024, at Beach Glass Estate in North East, Pennsylvania. It’s an honor to be their photographer, ready with camera in hand to document their story from beginning to end. They’re both so genuine and kind that capturing their authentic, heart-tugging connection during their documentary style photography sessions wasn’t hard.

A Kind Note from the Couple

Sometimes, it’s nice to hear from others before you hire someone as intimately involved in your story as your photographer. I was thrilled to receive this thoughtful note from Becca about her engagement session experience:

“Simply put, Jessee was put on this earth to be a photographer. Besides having the gift of capturing beautiful, artistic moments, she is also one of the warmest and most genuine people you will meet. I was drawn to Jessee’s photography because she captures people in photos that look effortless and have a gorgeous, elegant, and moody atmosphere. She was able to do the same for me and my fiancé in our engagement photoshoot, and I’m beyond ecstatic to have her be our wedding photographer as well.

If you fear looking stiff or being unphotogenic, Jessee somehow makes that all disappear. If you are worried about [overlooked] moments, Jessee captures them all and more. We are in love with the photos she took of us, and she made the process of getting our photos done fun, silly, loving, and just a memorable, lovely day. Cannot recommend her enough!”

Top Engagement Session FAQs

Want to learn more about the documentary photography style? Here are a few tips on getting authentic photos that tell a story and tug at heart strings:

What do we wear?

First, I will send you my What to Wear Guide to help you get going in the right direction, and then I can offer more specific outfit suggestions based on your location, style, and personality. If you want more help, I love when couples send me photos of potential outfits. In general, neutral/earth tones, layers, texture, and minimal patterns work well. Don’t forget to consider your shoes—they will show in photos!—and dress comfortably for the season and photo location.

Do I need a shot list? How do we pose?

Nope! If you want to peruse my blog or Instagram or browse around Pinterest for inspiration, I’m all for it! Please share your ideas with me. However, you can count on me to guide your session from beginning to end. We’ll warm up and get comfortable so you flow naturally through the poses like a pro. I promise to make it fun!

How do we prepare?

Once we decide on a time, location, and outfits, you’ll just need to build in plenty of time to get ready and commute (don’t forget to consider traffic!). I will send you a timeline before your session so you know what to expect.

How do we choose a photo location?

Finally, to hone in on the location and style piece of your session, I will send you a customized Location & Style Guide based on the answers you provide on your engagement session questionnaire. I will pull examples of poses and images I envision for each location to ensure we are on the same page and you’re confident about the types of images we will create together. Every piece of this session is tailor-made for you!
