how to find a photographer

If you’ve been following along with my Instagram stories (@jesseeallenphotography), you might know that I’ve been globetrotting for the last couple months. My southeast Asia travels have provided incredible opportunities to break out of my routine and gain some new perspective. I’ve jumped head-first into diverse countries, cultures, and food.

As much as I needed this for myself, traveling has been especially eye-opening as a wedding photographer. I’m equally excited for my clients to reap the benefits of this growth, too! New cultural experiences lead to increased attention to detail and the ability to anticipate moments and conceptualize compositions in a fresh way. If you’re wondering how to find a photographer that won’t let you down, I’ve got a few tips for you!

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Couple’s Session

It’s been a while, but I’m excited to share this first (and somewhat serendipitous) Vietnam couple’s session with you! Plus, I have three tips on how to find a photographer for you (and it’s not based on location!)

While in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, I learned about their local foods, culture, beliefs, and beautiful way of life. It was the experience of a lifetime, and I have Trúc and Duc to thank for it! Although we speak different languages and come from diverse backgrounds, we as humans can still authentically connect by having an open mind and experiencing new things together.

It all started when I booked a Food & Drink motorbike tour through the city. Duc was my tour guide, and he introduced me to over ten new foods and drinks that were absolutely delicious! During the tour, we began talking, and it didn’t take long for Duc to mention his lovely girlfriend. I was enjoying his company and wanted to meet his other half, so I offered to do a couple’s photoshoot for Duc and his girlfriend Trúc, who have been together for four years.

Duc and Trúc were not used to taking photos of themselves. Hiring a photographer is popular in the U.S., but other cultures are less familiar with intimate couple’s photoshoots. While Duc seemed apprehensive about this new experience, he said he would ask his girlfriend and get back to me. Shortly after the tour, Duc contacted me to schedule the session. He said he and his girlfriend decided that while they were nervous, they would love to have photos taken together—especially since their anniversary was the next week! We decided to meet the following day at 9:00 am, and I couldn’t wait!

Exploring the City | Ho Chi Minh Museum of Fine Arts

After some scouting beforehand, we met up at the Ho Chi Minh Museum of Fine Arts. Duc and Trúc are both a bit shy and modest but also so genuine and willing to get out of their comfort zone. It was quite different from my photoshoots in the U.S. because I could tell this was very new and unfamiliar—they admitted they had barely slept the night before because they were so nervous! As I do with other couples, we chatted for a bit to help them relax and feel comfortable.

It didn’t take long for them to warm up to the camera and get the hang of it. We took photos all around the city until about 1:00 pm! I asked them to stroll around the city as if on a date, giving us various shots in several locations. We were able to take our time and truly enjoy the overall experience. I loved watching them break out of their comfort zone with me for these amazing shots—they grew more confident with each image.

This was one of my favorite photoshoots, yet it was at a brand-new location for me. Many people choose their photographer simply because that photographer is familiar with their venue or location. However, a knowledgeable and experienced professional photographer can create beautiful photos anywhere. Ultimately, it all comes down to timing, skill, and communication. Hiring a photographer who can show up to any space and identify the best lighting, angles, and arrangements is crucial.

3 Things to Consider When Booking a Photographer

How to Find a Photographer Who’s Right for You

It’s More than Good Camera

On your wedding day, you don’t want your photographer to be scrambling if you need to change spaces or re-route last minute. And you don’t want a point-and-shoot photographer who’s just there to photograph the day’s highlights. You need a photographer who can help you troubleshoot and get those gorgeous shots and priceless moments, no matter the circumstances. That way, you can relive the experiences and feel the thrill of it all over again each time you look at your photos. In addition to the photographic elements, your photographer should be able to analyze human connections to convey feelings, emotions, and chemistry.

Check the Portfolio & Ask to See Full Galleries

While being familiar with a location can certainly be helpful, choosing a photographer for your photo session should not dictate your decision. Instead, base your choice on a photographer’s personality, style, and experience. When choosing a photographer, begin by looking through the photographer’s portfolio. Take note of your preferences, and then you can make an informed decision for your dream photoshoot!

Watch Out for Faux Photographers & Scams

Be wary of false advertisements and photographers who may steal others’ work. A small handful of overly-processed highlight images on their website and social media is a good indication of that. While everyone loves convenience, it’s best to set up a phone call or chat over coffee to go over the details. Don’t forget to read the fine print! Contracts and agreements are in place to protect both parties—the client, too! Ask to see the paperwork before making any kind of deposit.
